We take in parrot surrenders on a case-by-case basis based on need, space requirements, and foster home availability.
Surrendering a bird is not something that should be taken lightly. Your commitment to your animal is paramount. We do not have multiple homes waiting to take in birds. Please know that smaller, readily available species (conures, cockatiels, lovebirds, budgies) tend to stay in rescue for multiple months and are very difficult to find adoptive homes for.
Greta’s Roost runs exclusively on a network of foster homes in Southern Alberta. Each foster home has specific requirements and needs for taking in any surrendered birds. We have very limited space and we take in surrenders based on the needs of the birds, not on the needs of the humans.
We do not intake non-parrot species of birds (finches, doves, etc.).
If you are requesting surrender due to behavior issues (ie. biting, screaming, etc) please try our friends at ParrotSOS first!
If you identify that you are surrendering due to behavior issues with you bird, you will be referred to ParrotSOS for a consultation. We are NOT behavior experts, and our rescue is not meant to be used as a training facility. If you refuse to consult with ParrotSOS, you will be required to pay a surrender fee, based on the species and behavior requirements so that we can have ParrotSOS support the bird’s journey in rescue.
If you are considering surrender, please know that we require all the supplies that the bird currently has, including cage, food, vet records, toys, etc. They must be in clean and suitable condition as determined by a Greta’s Roost representative. If they are not in suitable condition, Greta’s Roost will not take the items. You are also required to transport the bird in a suitable travel crate/cage.
You will be responsible for arranging transport of the bird to an intake home location, which could be in Calgary or Lethbridge, depending on foster placement.

Surrender Process:
- After receiving photos of the bird and their cage, we will reach out to our foster homes for placement
- If placement is secured, we will email you a surrender agreement to sign and you will be expected to provide a donation via e-transfer for their care (vet visit, food, treats, perches, toys, cage, etc.)
- At this time, we will inform you whether we believe the cage the bird is currently in is suitable for us to take as well.
- Once the surrender agreement is signed, an intake coordinator will contact you to arrange transfer of the bird.
- After the bird is surrendered, they will be placed in a foster home, provided a suitable cage if needed, provided supplies (toys, perches, food), and we will book a vet appointment for a check-up.
- After a 2-week intake hold, the bird will be listed as available for adoption on our website.
